Ironing Shirts

Ironing is just about everyone’s most hated of chores. The ironing board is annoying to set up and the iron needs water and has to heat up, not to mention that its hot and dangerous for little people. It takes considerable care and knowledge to get through a ironing pile without causing damage to your clothing; Let alone the skill required to ensure that after all that care and effort you have beautifully ironed shirt, dress, or fitted sheet. Its hard, and its no wonder that we hate the thought of having to get out the ironing board. If you are going to tackle the dreaded ironing pile then we have a few tips for you to consider on your journey to the bottom of the pile.

It will always take longer with a standard iron.

  1. Expect every shirt to take you at least 5mins. And I mean at least.
  2. Lightly dampen your shirt first, especially if its linen.
  3. Most business shirts are cotton so the cotton setting on your iron is best, however many modern shirts have polyester in them or elastic which is predominantly in ladies shirts. In which case a lower setting is needed as these fabrics can melt easily. Do not ever let your iron rest on any item. It will scorch or melt it.
  4. Collar first, then back of the shoulders, then work the body of the shirt around the board and finally the sleeves.

Up until November 2015 we hand ironed every item of clothing that came to our business, every last one. So stick at it, and if getting to the bottom of the ironing pile is a must for you then invest in a good iron, one with a water tank and a steam button, they are closer to the industrial ones that we use and will give a much better result that the simple irons we all have at home.
